The UTSI Solar Observatory is a new addition to the campus. It is equipped with a Coronado Solar Max II 60mm telescope mounted on an iOptron® SmartStar® CubeTM with GOTONOVA mount. The Telescope will automatically track and center on the sun using a computer and Sky X professional software. The telescope is viewed using an astronomy camera which transmits the image to a live feed on the solar observatory website for teachers, students, or other interested people to view.

The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) is a graduate education and research institution located in Middle Tennessee adjacent to the U. S. Air Force Arnold Engineering Development Complex. UTSI was established in 1964 as part of The University of Tennessee and has become an internationally recognized institution for graduate study and research in engineering, physics, mathematics, and aviation systems and has made remarkable contributions at the local, state, national, and global levels.
